The Muonionjoki, literally “The river of Muonio”, is well-known for being the
largest free-flowing river in Europe.
During the winter, the temperature in Lapland can drop to -40°C! Thus, all sources
of freshwater fully freeze for several months.
In summertime when the river defrosts, its flow reaches an average of 170m3/s,
making it possible to raft on it! Although in most places the river remains quite calm and
peaceful, which is why one might find it more pleasant to do kayaking or to take a boat
tour to discover Swedish and Finnish riversides. I’ll let you guess which are the most
beautiful...
This boat tour is organized with the partnership of Lohestajan Maja, 8km up the
highway towards Muonio. With their equipment, Viktor will guide you upon the river for
a trip of about 1h-1h30 (count 30min more for preparation). The rented boat can only
welcome 3 people including the guide.
